Choosing an ATS

Best ATS for Independent and Solo Recruiters in 2026

By The Crumblelead Team·Published October 15, 2026·Last updated October 15, 2026

The best ATS for an independent or solo recruiter is one you can buy for a single seat on monthly terms, with published pricing and no features held back for bigger teams. On published prices for one user, Recruitly (free tier or $25), Manatal ($19) and Crumblelead ($30) sit at the bottom of the market, while Recruit CRM, Bullhorn, Loxo and Recruiterflow cost $95 to $149 or more per month.

Solo recruiters buy differently from agencies. One person pays for every tool personally, has no IT support and cannot afford a twelve-month contract for software that turns out to be wrong. This guide sets out what matters, a shortlist with honest trade-offs, and where Crumblelead fits and does not. Prices were checked on 15 October 2026 from vendor pricing pages, exclude tax and change often.

How many solo recruiters are there?

Nobody publishes an official count of one-person recruitment businesses. The closest proxy is the Office for National Statistics' 2026 data on UK businesses by size. It shows 12,845 employment placement agencies, about 75% of the class, with nought to four employees, and 20,885 of 30,265 businesses across the three recruitment classes in that band. That band includes two-to-four person firms and excludes unregistered sole traders, so it is not a count of solo recruiters, but it shows that very small firms are the majority.

What should a solo recruiter look for in an ATS?

  • No minimum seats and monthly billing. Some vendors require annual contracts or minimum terms; Loxo bills annually up front, for example.
  • Published pricing. Several vendors, including JobAdder, do not publish prices.
  • A LinkedIn workflow that works without Recruiter Corporate. LinkedIn's official ATS integration, Recruiter System Connect, needs a Recruiter Corporate or Professional Services seat, not Recruiter Lite, so solo recruiters rely on a browser extension or manual capture.
  • Low admin. Quick setup, email from your own address, a simple business development pipeline, and placement or fee tracking.
  • GDPR basics handled: privacy information, retention and subject access exports.

Which ATS suits a solo recruiter?

Recruitly if you want to start for free

Recruitly lists a free tier for up to five users and a Solo plan at $25 per month, or $20 billed annually. A free tier is a low-risk way to start, but check the user, record and feature caps before relying on it, since free tiers are rarely free of limits.

Manatal if price matters most

Manatal's Professional plan costs $19 per month, or $15 annually, and includes AI recommendations and scoring, a sourcing Chrome extension, job board posting and a careers page. It is capped at 15 jobs and 10,000 candidates across the account, and its Claude and ChatGPT connection needs Enterprise Plus at $55 to $59. See how much Manatal costs.

Crumblelead if you want everything on one seat

Crumblelead costs $30 per month, or $25 billed annually, with no seat minimum, month-to-month billing and a 14-day trial with no card. A single user gets every feature: AI matching with evidence, Crumble AI, a Claude and ChatGPT connection, branded CV exports, client and placement tracking, booking links and GDPR tools. Email sends from your own Gmail or Outlook address and your calendar syncs both ways.

It does not post to job boards, include a sourcing database or run a temp back office. Its LinkedIn Chrome extension imports the profile or company page you have open; read our integrations guide for LinkedIn's rules on extensions before you use it.

Recruit CRM if you want strong support and contractor tools

Recruit CRM's Pro plan costs $95 per month annually or $109 monthly, with timesheets, invoicing and a named account manager. It costs three to four times more than the low-cost options, so it makes most sense if you place contractors or need its outreach tools. See how much Recruit CRM costs.

Bullhorn, Recruiterflow and Loxo if you need more

Bullhorn Starter costs £80 per user per month in the UK, with no free trial. Recruiterflow's Platform plan, at $149 monthly or $119 annually, suits heavy outbound work with multichannel sequences. Loxo Core starts at $149, billed annually up front, and suits sourcing-heavy work. All three cost far more for one person than the low-cost options; buy them for a specific capability you will use daily. If you already pay for Recruiterflow, see Recruiterflow alternatives for small agencies for the other options.

What else does a solo recruiter pay for?

For many solo recruiters, LinkedIn is the biggest software cost, not the ATS. LinkedIn does not publish Recruiter Lite prices; third parties put it at about $170 per month, or about $1,680 a year (Pin, 2026), and UK reports range from about £1,440 to £2,200 a year plus VAT. It includes 30 InMails a month. A typical solo stack also includes Gmail or Outlook, pay-per-post job adverts, and optionally e-signature and accounting software.

What are the common misconceptions?

  • "You need Recruiter Corporate to recruit seriously." Many solo recruiters bill well on Recruiter Lite plus an ATS.
  • "Free ATS tiers are free forever." Check the user, record and feature caps.
  • "Official figures count solo recruiters." They do not; only the nought-to-four employee band exists.

FAQ

Is there a free ATS for solo recruiters?

Recruitly lists a free tier for up to five users. Check its caps before relying on it. Most other tools, including Crumblelead, offer a free trial rather than a free plan.

Is LinkedIn Recruiter Lite worth it for a solo recruiter?

Many solo recruiters bill well on it. Third parties put it at about $170 a month or $1,680 a year, often more than the ATS, so weigh the 30 InMails a month against your sourcing needs.

How much should a solo recruiter budget for software?

Low-cost ATS options cost $15 to $30 per month for one user. LinkedIn Recruiter Lite, if you use it, is estimated at about $170 a month, plus job adverts.
